TWR GTR 2013

The following is a series of photographs and brief notes on everything I’ve done to my GTR and any events I may have participated in during 2013…

More to come, so keep watching this space…

Having finally coughed up for a new radiator and associated parts, I eventually got around to fitting it during May…

As everything on my GTR is a one off (being the first one built by the factory), the new radiator is 4 core instead of 3 core and thus another 25mm deeper?  Consequently, I have had to modify the underside of the front clip so that it will clear the radiator and fans in the closed position and also had to shorten the N/S coolant pipe in order to fit a connection hose!  While I’m at it, I’ve also checked/cleaned the brakes and carried out a service…

All done in good time to get to the Goodwood Breakfast Club – Supecar Sunday on 02 June.  The weather was great and it was absolutely packed with supercars of all sorts and plenty of them (I counted 5 Ultima GTR’s), not to mention the spectators – it was the busiest one I’ve ever been too!  There are plenty of ‘very good’ pictures on the Piston Heads events forum.  The new 25% larger capacity radiator has certainly improved cooling, I’ve since had to up the thermostat to keep minimum temperature up.

And… wait for it, I’ve now also finally fitted the additional exhaust silencers!  These are nothing fancy, in fact they’re quite cheap having looked for a ‘very’ cost effective option without any packing, I found these Moroso spiral flow silencers in mild steel and painted black (shaped like cherry bombs).  They claim to reduce noise by 5 dB(A) without any restriction on flow (rated at 800cfm) – this should in theory get me below that magical 105 dB(A) noise limit to get on most tracks?  Clearly, installing them was far from straight forward as usual.  I had to get two off set 3” connectors made up to clear the chassis, then had to shorten both silencers to ensure they did not protrude too much outside of the bodywork and finally make some brackets and mounts just to make sure they don’t disappear down the road ‘if’ they happened to work lose…

Note the spiral flow and inner tube.  I also think they look okay albeit, not at all fancy, but ‘functional’…

Time for another noise test then… watch this space for the results coming very soon…

I didn’t get around to another noise test?  During the summer on a regular drive out, the car developed a serious coolant leak which turned out to be the header tank and hose leaking under pressure so I had to replace them with new later parts which obviously would not locate in the original position, so they also had to be repositioned!  During this work I got a little carried away and decided to remove the complete air con and heating systems – not as straight forward as you might imagine, even on a GTR.  The whole air con and heater system (compressor, dye canister, condenser radiators, heater matrix, heater air box/blower and associated hoses) has now been completely removed – only the wiring remains (as it is a part of the loom).  The theory being, this should save some weight and I do not need them for intended competition use!  Still a little making good to do in sealing the bulk heads where the hoses passed through.  A temporary compact fan is installed to provide demist… yet to be tried and tested.  Then the battery negative terminal breaks?  And if that wasn’t bad enough, the starter motor has now also failed!!!  Parts ordered, so more jobs for the new year then.

To say 2013 has not been a good year is probably an understatement.  It has been a very difficult year in business, which has significantly impacted on the term ‘work life balance’, the reality has been more like ‘living to work’.  You will know that is not a good situation to be in and you end up asking yourself, what’s the point in having this fantastic supercar if I do not do anything with it?  I fully intend to rectify this situation as soon as possible during 2014, so do wish me luck!

That’s it for 2013, look out for 2014 and beyond.  Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year!
